Overview
A triangular porcelain fraternal ashtray featuring the hand-painted emblem of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES), a Masonic appendant body. The piece features three cigarette rests, delicate gold-gilt trim, scattered gold stars, and the official Lefton crown mark on the underside.
Story
Created in the 1950s, this dish served as a proud symbol of membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, the largest fraternal organization in the world to admit both men and women. Its inverted star emblem holds deep biblical and moral symbolism.
Maker / Origin
George Zoltan Lefton, a Hungarian immigrant who arrived in Chicago in 1939, founded Lefton China in 1941. Following World War II, Lefton was among the first American businessmen to forge partnerships with Japanese ceramic workshops, helping to rebuild their post-war economy while importing high-quality, hand-painted porcelain to the American market.
Condition & Value
The ashtray appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or crazing. The hand-painted central emblem is crisp, and the gold-gilt trim shows very minimal wear, suggesting it was used primarily as a decorative trinket dish rather than an active ashtray.
