Story
In 1904, Marcus Samuel selected the Pecten clam shell as the official logo for Shell Oil, inspired by sea shells his family imported from the Caspian Sea. Promotional charms like this were given to gas station customers and loyal employees. It is a miniature artifact of mid-century American road trip culture.
