Overview

A charming pair of small porcelain dishes featuring lobed, petal-shaped rims inspired by chrysanthemum blossoms. They are hand-painted in overglaze Famille Rose enameled polychrome with delicate floral branches and central figures, set off by a diaper-patterned inner border.

Story

During late 19th-century Jingdezhen production, kilns revived classical Qing floral motifs to satisfy both domestic demand and eager European export markets. The scalloped petal rim mimics blooming chrysanthemums, symbol of longevity and autumn ease. Each spray was painted completely by hand, making every dish subtly unique.

Maker / Origin

Crafted in Jingdezhen, China's historical porcelain capital where artisan workshops specialized in specific steps of production—from throwing the clay into lobed molds to firing and fine overglaze enamel painting. Workshop artisans passed down formulas for vibrant pinks, greens, and iron-reds through generations.

Condition & Value

The enamels appear relatively well-preserved with vibrant pink and green pigments. Minor surface wear and tiny firing imperfections consistent with hand production are visible; scalloped rims should be carefully checked for micro-chips or restored fleabites.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
