Overview
A charming collection of eleven vintage porcelain figurines depicting stylized, rosy-cheeked children in traditional Bavarian attire. Based on the pastoral drawings of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, these hand-painted pieces capture a nostalgic, idealized vision of childhood. Each figure is meticulously detailed, showcasing the soft, earthy color palette characteristic of the Goebel factory's production.
Story
In 1934, Franz Goebel saw Franciscan nun Berta Hummel's drawings of children and realized their potential. Despite Nazi opposition to her 'subversive' art, these figurines became a global sensation, especially with WWII American GIs.
Maker / Origin
The W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik was founded in 1871, but its legacy was forever changed by its partnership with Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (born Berta Hummel). Her Franciscan values of simplicity, peace, and childhood innocence guided the artistic direction of the line.
Condition & Value
The figurines appear to be in good display condition without obvious major breaks. However, close inspection is required to check for crazing in the glaze, tiny chips on delicate extremities (like fingers, hat brims, and flower petals), or professional repairs.
