Overview
This is a beautifully hand-carved wooden wall plaque depicting an Orca (Killer Whale) in the traditional formline art style of the Pacific Northwest Coast. It features relief-carved details highlighted with black paint, traditional ovoid and U-form shapes, and shimmering abalone shell inlays for the eyes and joints.
Story
Carved in 2013 in the historic rain-forested port of Ketchikan, Alaska, this piece captures the spirit of the Inside Passage. The Orca is revered by coastal Indigenous cultures as a symbol of family, strength, and travel. This modern souvenir connects its owner directly to the ancient storytelling traditions of the Great Land.
Maker / Origin
The piece is signed with the initials 'R.G.' and was retailed through the Inner Passage Trading Company, a well-known gallery in Ketchikan, Alaska, owned by Raoul and Joanne Grospe. While 'R.G.' represents a local regional artisan rather than a highly collected, nationally registered master carver, their work beautifully carries on the regional design vocabulary of Southeast Alaska.
Condition & Value
The carving appears to be in excellent original condition with no visible chips, cracks, or fading to the black paint. The abalone shell inlays are intact and retain their luster. The wood grain shows beautiful natural variation. Excellent condition like this helps secure the higher end of the value range.
