Overview
This charming regional promotional booklet is a culinary time capsule celebrating Oregon's signature crop: the hazelnut (historically known as the filbert). Published by Westnut in Dundee, Oregon, it features whimsical illustrations of dancing bakers and was designed to introduce home cooks to the versatility of the local nut.
Story
Oregon's Willamette Valley produces 99 percent of the entire United States hazelnut crop. This vintage booklet was created during a transitional era when the state's growers were actively rebranding the traditional 'filbert' to the globally recognized 'hazelnut'.
Maker / Origin
Westnut was a prominent processing brand under Gray & Company, a major player in Oregon's agricultural history based in Dundee—the heart of Oregon wine and nut country. They specialized in processing local cherries and hazelnuts, creating promotional materials like this to drive domestic demand for Pacific Northwest crops.
Condition & Value
The booklet is in good vintage condition with some light edge wear. There is some minor adhesive residue or paper loss visible on the lower left of the back cover. The stapled business card on the front cover is a fascinating period addition but has caused minor staple indentation to the cover page. The interior pages appear clean.
