Overview
An exceptional wheel-thrown porcelain studio pottery vase featuring a highly complex, sage-green crystalline glaze. The squat, lobed form is accented by applied dark slip 'beads' or nodes along the shoulder, which contrast beautifully with the organic, circular zinc silicate crystals grown during a meticulous kiln-firing process.
Story
In 2009, American ceramic artist Glenn Woods formulated this vase's glaze to grow its own crystals. By holding the kiln at a precise temperature for hours, zinc silicate molecules aligned to bloom like frozen snowflakes in a green pool.
Maker / Origin
Glenn Woods, working alongside partner Keith Herbrand, is a highly regarded American studio potter celebrated for his mastery of crystalline glazes. Operating out of Florida, Woods is known for pushing the chemical boundaries of ceramics, transforming unpredictable kiln environments into canvas-like surfaces of perfect, suspended crystal formations.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or crazing outside of the intentional glaze characteristics. The foot rim shows typical minor shelf wear and remnants of the glaze-catching grinding process, which is standard for crystalline pottery and does not hurt the value.
