Story

Before the flip of a light switch became a universal habit, this object was the final companion of the day. In the mid-1800s, a household would keep a row of these on a hall table; as the sun set, each family member would light their own and carry it up the dark, drafty stairs.

Maker / Origin

While often unsigned, pieces like this were the backbone of the 'Brummagem' brass trade in Birmingham, England, which was the world's center for brass founding.

Condition & Value

The brass shows a lovely, authentic aged patina with minor surface pitting and oxidation consistent with its age. As noted on the tag, the internal push-up slide is missing, which is a common occurrence with these used tools. This loss of functionality reduces the value by roughly 30% compared to a complete specimen.
