Overview
An exquisite, heavy leaded crystal celery or relish dish fashioned in a classic canoe shape. It features a stunning combination of deep geometric mitre cuts, hobstars, strawberry diamond fills, and a beautifully wheel-engraved daisy or cosmos flower at its center.
Story
During the Gilded Age, American dining tables became theatrical stages of extreme etiquette. Celery was a highly prized, expensive luxury vegetable that required its own dedicated, ice-filled crystal vessel to show off its freshness to wealthy dinner guests.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece exhibits the masterful cutting techniques of top-tier American houses like Libbey, Hawkes, or J. Hoare. These workshops employed European immigrant artisans who pushed the limits of glass cutting, making American crystal the most coveted in the world at the turn of the 20th century.
Condition & Value
The glass appears bright and clear with no obvious clouding or 'sick glass' syndrome. There are minor, expected tiny fleabites along the sharp edges of the teeth and mitre cuts, which is typical for authentic lead glass of this age. Excellent preservation overall.
