Overview

A stunning example of Swedish art glass, this hand-formed crystal pelican features the fluid, organic lines characteristic of the Marcolin brothers' workshop. The piece utilizes high-lead crystal to achieve exceptional clarity and light refraction, capturing the essence of the bird in a minimalist, sculptural form.

Story

In 1954, two Italian brothers, Josef and Benito Marcolin, brought the ancient secrets of Murano glassmaking to the forests of Sweden. This pelican represents the perfect marriage of fiery Italian technique and cool Scandinavian design.

Maker / Origin

The Marcolin brothers trained at the legendary Venini factory in Venice before founding FM Konstglas in Ronneby. They became world-renowned for their 'FM' (Fabbrica d'Arte Marcolin) style, which blended complex Italian 'sommerso' techniques with the sleek, naturalistic aesthetics popular in Northern Europe.

Condition & Value

The crystal appears exceptionally clear with no visible 'sick glass' clouding. There are some surface scratches on the underside of the base consistent with shelf wear; these are expected and do not significantly detract from value. Excellent condition. Value is driven by the Marcolin signature and the size of the piece.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
