Overview
An evocative oil on canvas board painting depicting a classic Florida wetlands scene at sunset, framed in a rustic wooden molding with a linen liner. The composition features a vibrant, fiery yellow-orange sky reflecting off still waters, framed by Spanish moss-draped oaks and a central cluster of palm trees.
Story
In Jim Crow-era Florida, a group of self-taught Black artists defied segregation by painting idyllic landscapes and selling them from their car trunks. John Maynor was one of these legendary 'Highwaymen,' capturing the state's raw beauty.
Maker / Origin
John Maynor (1948–2016) was one of the original 26 Florida Highwaymen, inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Known for his rapid, expressive brushwork and dramatic use of light, Maynor spent decades capturing the vanishing Florida wilderness, often painting on inexpensive materials like Upson board or canvas board to keep his art accessible.
Condition & Value
The painting appears to be in excellent vintage condition with vibrant colors and no visible paint loss, flaking, or warping. The original period frame shows minor wear consistent with age, and the linen liner has very light, expected dust toning. Excellent preservation of the paint layer supports the higher end of the value range.
