Overview
This is a vintage wooden returning boomerang featuring hand-painted and screen-printed Indigenous Australian motifs. The piece is signed by Richard Bell, a highly prominent Kamilaroi artist, activist, and co-founder of the pro-Aboriginal artist collective pro-mma (now known as Campfire Group).
Story
Created during the late 20th-century boom of Indigenous art commercialization, this boomerang bears the signature of Richard Bell, who would later win the prestigious Telstra National Aboriginal Art Award in 2003. Before becoming a global contemporary art icon known for challenging the art establishment, Bell designed commercial souvenir pieces that blended traditional storytelling with modern graphic appeal.
Maker / Origin
Richard Bell (born 1953) is a Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman, and Gurang Gurang artist and activist based in Brisbane. He is famous for his politically charged contemporary art, including his famous painting 'Aboriginal Art It's An Aboriginal Thing' and his 'Embassy' installation shown worldwide.
Condition & Value
The boomerang is in good vintage condition. There is minor edge wear, light scuffing on the painted surfaces, and some paint loss on the reverse side consistent with age and display. The integrity of the wood and the main graphic on the front remain excellent, which preserves its display value.
