Overview
This is a striking tripod censer, or 'jue', modeled after the iconic lead-glazed burial wares of the Tang Dynasty. It features a globular body supported by three molded paw feet, decorated with a vibrant, dripping palette of cobalt blue, amber, and straw-colored glazes.
Story
During the Tang Dynasty, elite tombs were filled with brilliant, multi-colored glazed vessels to show off wealth in the afterlife. This piece captures that ancient spirit, using the classic dripping glaze technique that has fascinated collectors for over a thousand years.
Maker / Origin
While the original Tang potters of the 8th century remain anonymous, this 20th-century piece was crafted by skilled Chinese revivalist workshops. These artisans dedicated themselves to replicating the complex, unpredictable firing techniques of their ancestors to satisfy a global obsession with early Chinese art.
Condition & Value
The vessel shows typical crazing throughout the glaze, which is expected for this glaze type. There is some minor surface wear, dirt accumulation, and glaze flaking near the feet, but the legs and rim appear intact without major structural cracks or repairs. Excellent preservation of the delicate paw feet.
