This is a large, monumental tripod incense burner (kōro) rendered in the classic Ko-Imari (Old Imari) 'Sometsuke Kinrande' tradition. Decorated in vibrant underglaze cobalt blue, rich overglaze enamels, and gilt, it features segmented 'madori' panels depicting traditional landscape pavilions, pine trees, and lush floral scrolls beneath an openwork pierced lid.
Story
Standing an impressive 23.6 cm tall, this incense burner blends centuries-old Edo court aesthetics with modern master potting. Made by the Nitten-associated ceramic artist Shumei in Arita, it revives the grand gilded style of Old Imari export ware.
Maker / Origin
The piece is inscribed and signed by the master ceramist Shumei (朱明), who is noted on the wooden box as an exhibitor with the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). Arita potters with Nitten credentials are renowned for balancing strict historic techniques—like multi-firing polychrome overglazes—with sculptural modern exhibition scale.
Condition & Value
Appears in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations to the pierced lid or body. The tomobako retains its original inscribed calligraphy and red seal mark. Pristine condition with the original box ensures maximum collector interest.
