Overview
This is a beautifully preserved natural skeleton of a mushroom coral, characterized by its distinctive dome shape and radiating, blade-like ridges called septa. Unlike colonial corals, this specimen represents the calcium carbonate home of a single, massive solitary coral polyp.
Story
Victorian explorers braved tropical seas to harvest these 'mushroom stones' for European curiosity cabinets. Unlike reef-builders, this single giant polyp lived unattached, slowly crawling across the ocean floor on its own.
Maker / Origin
Likely indo-pacific ocean.
Condition & Value
The specimen appears to be in very good condition with excellent symmetry and minimal visible damage to the delicate outer ridges. There is minor dust accumulation in the deep crevices, which is typical for vintage specimens. Excellent preservation of the fragile septa commands a premium.
