Overview

This impressive 44.8 cm porcelain charger features vibrant underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red with poly-chrome enamels depicting a central basket of overflowing flowers surrounded by patterned brocade reserves. The underside bears a six-character apocryphal Kangxi mark ('Da Qing Kangxi Nian Zhi') set within underglaze blue cloud scrolls around the exterior rim.

Story

During the late Qing and early Republic periods, Chinese kilns produced magnificent, large chargers inspired by earlier 18th-century export porcelain and Kangxi designs. These grand chargers were created both for wealthy domestic households and eager international collectors who adored the classic Imari palette. Featuring symbolic flower baskets representing abundance and harmony, this piece carries a traditional tribute mark to the glorious Kangxi era.

Maker / Origin

Produced by skilled artisans in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China, this piece draws heavily on the famous Imari and Wucai decorative styles. Artisans in these workshops specialized in recreating historical reign marks and classic composition layouts, keeping centuries-old porcelain traditions alive for new generations of art enthusiasts.

Condition & Value

Appears in very good structural condition with minimal visible rim chipping. Minor rubbing to the overglaze gold/enamel decoration consistent with age. Well-preserved overall.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
