Overview

A globular blue and white porcelain storage jar featuring a hand-painted mythical Qilin (Kirin) amidst stylized clouds and plantain trees. The piece is topped with a matching flat-topped lid and displays the characteristic thick, iron-spotted white glaze of provincial Korean kilns.

Story

Created in the late Joseon era, this jar features the Qilin, a mythical beast signaling prosperity and wise rule. Its rustic, iron-speckled glaze reflects the Korean aesthetic of finding sublime beauty in natural imperfection.

Maker / Origin

While the specific provincial kiln remains anonymous, Joseon potters operated under a deeply Neo-Confucian philosophy. Unlike the highly regulated imperial kilns of China, Korean regional workshops embraced a freer, more spontaneous brushwork style that celebrated the individual hand of the craftsman.

Condition & Value

The jar appears in good structural condition with no major visible cracks. There are typical manufacturing flaws including iron spots, glaze pitting, and firing grit on the unglazed foot, which are characteristic of this style and do not detract from its value. Excellent preservation of the lid.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
