Overview
An imposing mahogany armchair executed in the highly ornate Chippendale Revival style, featuring a pierced splat back and dramatic cabriole legs. The knees are carved with expressive 'North Wind' or green man masks, terminating in robust hairy paw-and-ball feet. The serpentine crest rail and scrolled arms are heavily embellished with foliate and floral motifs.
Story
Crafted during the Gilded Age, this chair revived the theatrical excess of 18th-century design. Its fierce 'North Wind' knee carvings were meant to ward off evil spirits while showing off the owner's worldly taste.
Maker / Origin
While the specific cabinetmaker is unidentified, this piece represents the high-end revival workshops of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Makers of this period competed to out-carve original 18th-century designs, utilizing newly imported dense mahogany to achieve incredibly deep, sculptural relief work.
Condition & Value
The chair appears to be in very good structural condition with a rich, dark patina. There is minor wear and rubbing to the finish on the armrests and feet consistent with age and use. The striped upholstery is a modern replacement and is clean and intact. Excellent original carving preservation maintains its value.
