Overview
A beautiful collection of hand-ground antique stone marbles, primarily featuring banded carnelian, chalcedony, and natural agate. These pieces showcase the distinct hand-faceted and polished surfaces characteristic of late Victorian-era German lapidary craftsmanship.
Story
In the late 1800s, German lapidaries in a small river valley transformed raw Brazilian agate into these gleaming treasures. Children prized these 'aggies' above all other marbles, using them as elite shooters in schoolyard dirt rings.
Maker / Origin
The town of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, became the world capital of gemstone carving. Local water-powered grinding mills utilized massive sandstone wheels, where craftsmen would lie prone on wooden benches to press the stones against the spinning wheels to shape these perfect spheres.
Condition & Value
The marbles appear to be in good antique condition with a strong, glossy polish. Some minor surface flea bites and tiny bruises from historical play are visible, which is expected and authenticates their age. Excellent preservation of the natural banding.
