Story
During Japan's Edo period, street stalls serving buckwheat soba noodles exploded in popularity across urban centers like Edo (Tokyo). Artisans in Arita created millions of these versatile small ceramic cups, known as soba choko, which served as dipping bowls, teacups, and everyday drinking vessels.
Maker / Origin
Rather than a single named artist, this piece emerges from the famous kiln communities of Arita in Saga Prefecture. The potter-painters of Arita mastered the art of cobalt underglaze decoration (sometsuke), developing efficient yet highly expressive brushwork techniques passed down through generations of guild craftsmen.
Condition & Value
Appears to be in very good antique condition overall with strong cobalt pigmentation. Minor glaze imperfections, kiln spots, and gentle wear on the unglazed foot ring are consistent with age and hand production. Excellent condition greatly helps preserve value.
