Overview
This striking ceramic vase features a highly stylized, swirling cornucopia or 'horn of plenty' design, finished in a rich, multi-toned green drip glaze. Marked on the underside with the raised 'Royal Haeger U.S.A.' signature and mold number R173, it represents the height of mid-century American art pottery design.
Story
In 1938, designer Royal Arden Hickman joined Haeger Potteries, instantly transforming the company's traditional commercial line into a sensation of fluid, organic Art Deco sculpture that captured the imagination of post-depression America.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1871 by David H. Haeger as a brickmaking company, Haeger Potteries transitioned into artware in the early 20th century. The 'Royal Haeger' line was launched in 1938 to showcase the avant-garde, sculptural designs of Royal Arden Hickman, whose dramatic animal figurines and sweeping vessels became synonymous with mid-century modern home decor.
Condition & Value
The photos show a prominent chip on the bottom edge of the base rim, exposing the white ceramic body underneath, as well as some typical shelf wear and glaze imperfections on the underside. This damage reduces the potential market value by approximately 40-50% compared to a mint-condition example.
