Overview
A large, heavy cast bronze honorary award plaque from the Austro-Hungarian Empire's Ministry of Culture and Education. It features a high-relief depiction of Minerva (Athena), the goddess of wisdom, holding a laurel wreath alongside her symbolic owl and a stack of scholarly books.
Story
Commissioned by the k.k. Ministerium für Kultus und Unterricht, this was the ultimate 'gold star' for Austrian intellectual achievement. The goddess Minerva offers a wreath not to a soldier, but to a scholar, reflecting Vienna's obsession with art and science at the turn of the century.
Maker / Origin
Carl Philipp (1872–1949) was a prominent Viennese sculptor and medalist who studied under the legendary Edmund von Hellmer. Known for his public monuments and delicate bronze work, he was a key figure in the artistic circles of Imperial Vienna, contributing to the city's 'Ringstraße' style of grand, classical beauty.
Condition & Value
The obverse shows a beautiful, even aged patina with minimal rubbing on the high points. The reverse shows significant oxidation and surface encrustation, likely from being mounted against a wall or in a damp environment for decades. This 'honest wear' confirms its age and hasn't compromised the artistic detail on the front.
