Overview
This is an original Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print triptych depicting the legendary warrior Akushichibyo Kagekiyo attempting to assassinate Minamoto no Yoritomo during the dedication ceremony at Todai-ji Temple in Nara. Masterfully composed by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the central drama features Kagekiyo disguised in black robes wielding a naginata as guards swarm the temple courtyard.

In 1195, a disguised samurai infiltrated a grand temple ceremony to slay the Shogun. In 1858, Utagawa Kuniyoshi captured that breathless moment of dynamic ambush with cinematic tension.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) was one of the undisputed giants of late Edo ukiyo-e, famous worldwide for his dynamic warrior prints (musha-e), mythical monsters, and playful cats. He revolutionized action composition in Japanese art, directly inspiring modern manga and anime visual storytelling.
