Overview
This is a classic vintage floral pin frog, also known as a kenzan, featuring a heavy brass base set with dozens of sharp steel needles. Used by florists and homemakers alike, these clever devices anchor flower stems securely at the bottom of a vase to create structured, artistic arrangements.
Story
Invented in the late 19th century, these spiked tools revolutionized Western floral design. They allowed everyday homemakers to mimic the elegant, minimalist structures of Japanese Ikebana right in their own parlors.
Maker / Origin
While many mid-century pin frogs were imported from Japan—the birthplace of Ikebana—numerous American companies like Dazey Manufacturing Co. and Blue Ribbon Flower Holder Co. patented their own variations during the gardening boom of the 1930s to 1950s.
Condition & Value
The pin frog shows significant surface rust on the steel pins and a heavy patina on the brass base. While the rust is cosmetic and typical for an item submerged in water, cleaning it with a wire brush would improve its usability, though some collectors prefer the aged look.
