Overview
This is a highly collectible, early 20th-century wooden shipping crate featuring bold, black-stenciled graphics for 'Black Swan Silent Lighter Non-Poisonous Double Dip Matches.' Constructed with sturdy finger-jointed corners, it was designed to transport 144 boxes of safety matches manufactured by the industry giant, The Diamond Match Company.
Story
In 1911, Diamond Match Co. patented a non-toxic formula using sesquisulfide of phosphorus, ending the deadly 'phossy jaw' disease that plagued factory workers. This crate proudly advertised 'non-poisonous' matches, marking a massive humanitarian triumph in industrial history.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1881, The Diamond Match Company quickly grew into the largest manufacturer of matches in the United States. Under the leadership of Ohio Columbus Barber, the company revolutionized the industry by developing safer manufacturing processes and sharing their non-toxic patents freely with competitors to save lives.
Condition & Value
The crate is in good vintage condition with beautiful, dark stenciling. There is expected wear, including minor wood splitting along the bottom edge, surface oxidation on the nails, and a natural wood knot that interrupts the 'Lighter' text.
