Overview

A set of three vintage, double-sided cardboard beer coasters advertising Harp Lager Beer. These circular coasters feature the classic blue and white branding with the iconic Irish Brian Boru harp logo, noting importation by the Guinness-Harp Corporation of New York.

Story

Launched in 1960 by Guinness to meet the rising global demand for lager, Harp Beer utilized the historic Irish harp symbol. These coasters traveled from Ireland to New York during the mid-century import boom, surviving decades of pub life.

Maker / Origin

Harp Lager was created by the legendary Guinness brewery at the Great Northern Brewery in Dundalk, Ireland. To appeal to a changing global palate in the mid-20th century, Guinness hired German master brewer Dr. Herman Muender to create a first-rate Irish lager.

Condition & Value

The coasters show moderate wear consistent with age and actual tavern use. There is noticeable water staining, color fading, and edge scuffing, particularly on the bottom coaster. This honest wear reduces the value to serious collectors but adds authentic vintage character.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
