Overview
A beautiful stoneware vase from Denby's celebrated 'Danesby Ware' Pastel Range, featuring a soft, sponged or sprayed glaze in delicate shades of blue, green, and pale yellow. This range represented a dramatic shift for the historic industrial pottery, moving away from utilitarian salt-glazed stoneware toward highly artistic, decorative studio-style wares.
Story
In the 1930s, Derbyshire's industrial giant Denby decided to bring the soft, romantic colors of the English countryside indoors. They developed a secret, matte-crystalline glaze technique that made cold stoneware feel like velvet.
Maker / Origin
Established in 1809, Bourne Denby began by making heavy-duty stoneware bottles, jars, and telegraph insulators. In the early 20th century, particularly under the artistic direction of designers like Glyn Colledge and Donald Gilbert, they successfully pivoted to art pottery, creating the 'Danesby Ware' brand to compete with high-end studio potters.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in very good vintage condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major glaze losses. There is minor shelf wear on the unglazed foot rim, which is entirely consistent with age. Excellent preservation of the delicate matte glaze surface.
