These are original polychrome woodblock prints (nishiki-e) by Toyohara Kunichika featuring dramatic Kabuki actors paired with vibrant seasonal flora like hydrangeas and peonies. Kunichika was renowned as the master of the dramatic close-up bust portrait (ōkubi-e) during Japan's transformative Meiji period.
Story
In 1870s Tokyo, Kabuki actors were the pop idols of their day. Kunichika captured their theatrical grimaces and dramatic pauses against lavish botanical backdrops just as traditional Edo culture collided with modern Western influence.
Maker / Origin
Toyohara Kunichika was one of the last great masters of the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock school. A student of the famous Utagawa Kunisada, he dedicated his life almost exclusively to depicting the glamorous, high-energy world of the Tokyo Kabuki stage.
Condition & Value
