Overview
This is a striking three-footed toothpick holder crafted in 'black amethyst' glass, featuring an intricate beaded grape and leaf motif with a scalloped rim. While it appears solid black at first glance, holding it up to a strong light source reveals a deep, secret purple glow.
Story
During the mid-1900s, Pennsylvania glassmakers mastered 'black amethyst' glass, a formula so saturated with metal oxides that it looks pitch black until held to the sun, when it suddenly blushes a deep, royal purple.
Maker / Origin
Established in 1889, the Westmoreland Glass Company was renowned for its high-quality milk glass and decorative tableware. Operating out of Grapeville, Pennsylvania, they became famous for their detailed, hand-pressed patterns and innovative color formulas before closing their doors in 1984.
Condition & Value
The toothpick holder appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or flea bites along the delicate scalloped rim or feet. Excellent condition preserves its full collector value. Value is driven by the popularity of the 'Beaded Grape' pattern and the collectible nature of vintage toothpick holders.
