Overview
A rectangular porcelain bonsai planter or bulb pot decorated in the Famille Rose palette. It features hand-painted scenes of scholars in a landscape on the long sides, flanked by calligraphic inscriptions on the short ends. The vessel is designed with a drainage hole at the base and sits on four corner feet.
Story
This planter depicts the legendary 4th-century calligrapher Wang Xizhi, who famously derived the fluid secrets of his brushstrokes from watching the graceful movements of geese. On the reverse, scholars gather for a poetry and wine game, celebrating the elegant lifestyle of China's historical literati.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned by a specific master, this piece was produced in the historic porcelain center of Jingdezhen. The artisans here preserved the refined painting styles of the late Qing dynasty and Republic periods, catering to a mid-century resurgence of interest in traditional scholar-art objects.
Condition & Value
There is a significant, visible hairline crack running vertically down the side with the calligraphy, extending over the rim and slightly into the interior. There is also typical soil staining and wear to the interior and base from actual horticultural use. The crack reduces the potential value by approximately 50-60%.
