Overview

A large, atmospheric oil on canvas landscape depicting a pastoral scene with a figure tending cattle in a sun-dappled mountain valley. Signed 'L. Roda' in the lower corner, this work features a beautifully preserved, hand-written Italian provenance inscription on the reverse dated 1955, housed in its original gilded frame.

Story

Painted in the late 19th or early 20th century, this canvas captures the quiet majesty of the Italian Alps. A handwritten note on the back from 1955 reveals it was a treasured family heirloom passed down to a beloved son.

Maker / Origin

Leonardo Roda (1868–1933) was an acclaimed Italian landscape painter from the Piedmont region, celebrated for his mastery of light and shadow in alpine settings. He studied at the Albertina Academy in Turin and dedicated his career to capturing the rugged beauty of the Valle d'Aosta and surrounding mountain ranges.

Condition & Value

The painting appears to be in very good antique condition with minor surface grime and light craquelure consistent with age. The original gilded frame shows minor wear and small losses to the gilding, which is typical for its age. Excellent preservation of the canvas backing and historical labels.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
