Overview
A striking Japanese porcelain ovoid display vase featuring a dynamic relief-molded Shishi (guardian lion) leaping through a sea of underglaze blue waves and swirling clouds. The contrast between the crisp, stylized blue waves and the softly rendered, pale-glazed mythical beast showcases the technical mastery of Arita's premier workshop.
Story
Created during Japan's golden age of international exhibition, this vase captures the ancient Shishi lion leaping over turbulent waves. This powerful motif symbolized overcoming life's obstacles with courage and spiritual strength.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1875 by Ezoye Yasuhei in Arita, Koransha (The Company of the Scented Orchid) was established to bring traditional Japanese porcelain to the global stage. They won grand prizes at the 1878 Paris World Exposition and became official purveyors to the Japanese Imperial Household, renowned for combining deep cobalt blue underglazes with innovative western-influenced designs.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in very good antique condition with no visible chips, cracks, or major glaze losses. There is minor shelf wear and light staining on the unglazed foot rim, which is entirely consistent with age. Excellent condition commands a premium.
