Overview
A classic early 20th-century cast iron still bank depicting a stern-faced policeman in a double-breasted uniform. This heavy, two-part sand-cast figure features its original blue and flesh-toned painted finish and bears the prominent raised 'ARCADE' maker's mark on its back.
Story
Introduced during a golden age of American thrift, this heavy iron policeman stood guard over children's pennies. His stern face and double-breasted coat served as a visual reminder of security and civic duty in the 1920s.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1885, the Arcade Manufacturing Company of Freeport, Illinois, transitioned from making small household hardware to becoming one of America's premier producers of cast iron toys and still banks. Famous for their incredible attention to detail and robust construction, Arcade's toys became household staples until the company shifted to defense production during World War II.
Condition & Value
The bank shows moderate to heavy paint loss and surface oxidation consistent with age and play wear, but retains a good portion of its original blue and flesh-toned paint. There are no apparent cracks or chips in the cast iron itself. The authentic wear actually helps verify its age against modern reproductions.
