Overview
A rare, entirely hand-painted (nikuhitsu) album depicting the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road, complete with 56 individual illustrations. Unlike mass-produced woodblock prints, this volume features original ink and color washes on paper, capturing the famous scenic route with intimate, fluid brushwork.
Story
Created during Japan's rapid modernization in the Meiji era, this album preserves the romance of the historic Tokaido highway. Each page served as a hand-held window to a vanishing world of travelers, teahouses, and sacred peaks.
Maker / Origin
Utagawa Yoshitora was a prominent pupil of the legendary Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Active from the late Edo period into the early Meiji era, he was highly versatile, known for his warrior prints, depictions of foreign modernization, and classic landscapes.
Condition & Value
The album shows typical signs of age, including light finger-soiling, minor edge wear, and gentle toning of the paper. The binding remains intact, and the pigments retain remarkable vibrancy with minimal fading. This level of preservation is highly desirable for a handled manuscript.
