Overview
A beautifully executed miniature Nantucket Lightship basket featuring a classic swing handle and traditional bone or faux-ivory ear washers. These tiny baskets require immense dexterity to weave, mirroring the exact construction techniques of their full-sized historical counterparts.
Story
Nantucket lightship keepers in the 19th century began weaving these baskets to pass the lonely hours at sea. This miniature version carries on that maritime tradition, packing historic craftsmanship into a palm-sized treasure.
Maker / Origin
While the tag indicates 'Nantucket Hand Crafted Baskets,' many of these fine miniatures were made by local island artisans or cottage-industry weavers who specialized in keeping the lightship basketry tradition alive. Legendary makers like Jose Formoso Reyes popularized the style as a fashion accessory in the mid-20th century, inspiring generations of weavers.
Condition & Value
The basket appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible broken weavers, splitting on the rim, or damage to the handle. The original paper tag is still attached, which is rare. Excellent preservation like this commands a premium.
