Overview
This is a striking Japanese porcelain brush pot (fude-tate) featuring intricate openwork (sukashibori) carving of a dynamic imperial dragon amidst swirling clouds. Hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue, it showcases the classic Hirado style of porcelain art, complete with its original signed wooden presentation box (tomobako).
Story
Crafted in the mid-20th century, this vessel carries the legacy of Mikawachi (Hirado) porcelain, which was once reserved exclusively as presentation gifts for the Japanese Shogun and foreign dignitaries.
Maker / Origin
The base is marked with the seal of Ando Tozan (Ando Kiln), a respected workshop continuing the fine ceramic traditions of Japan. The accompanying tomobako (wooden box) is hand-signed and sealed by the master potter, certifying its origin and artistic lineage.
Condition & Value
The brush pot appears to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations to the delicate openwork. The original wooden box shows minor age-related toning, which is normal and desirable as it confirms its vintage. Excellent condition with original packaging commands a premium.
