Overview

A classic example of American machine-pressed glass, this footed urn features deep vertical fluting and a matching domed lid topped with a tiered, pointed finial.

Story

Post-war American families in the 1940s and 50s were deeply enamored with the 'Colonial Revival' movement, a design trend that sought comfort in the aesthetics of the nation's founding era.

Maker / Origin

The Federal Glass Company, established in 1900 in Columbus, Ohio, was a pioneer in the mass production of 'Depression Glass' and later, heat-tempered kitchenware.

Condition & Value

The glass appears clear without significant 'sick glass' clouding. The finial, which is the most vulnerable part of this design, appears intact in the photo. Excellent condition for these common household items maintains their modest value. These pieces are widely collected but were produced in large quantities.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
