This exquisite Japanese porcelain sake cup combines underglaze cobalt blue (*sometsuke*) with delicate overglaze polychrome enamels (*iro-e*). The exterior features dynamic depictions of mythical *qilin* (kirin) moving through stylized clouds, while the interior is decorated with vibrant floral sprays framing a central landscape roundel.
Story
Centuries ago in Japan, ceramicists revived the legendary Kutani kilns, fusing bold blue underglaze with vibrant enamels. The mythical kirin bounding across the exterior symbolized peace, prosperity, and the arrival of an enlightened era.
Maker / Origin
The base bears the underglaze two-character cobalt mark '九谷' (Kutani). Originating in the 17th century under the Maeda clan, Kutani porcelain was revived in the early 19th century through kiln movements like Kasugayama and Yoshidaya, leading to a flourishing tradition of fine studio and export wares in Kaga Province.
Condition & Value
Appears to be in very good antique condition with light kiln grit, typical foot rim darkening, and subtle wear to the overglaze enamels consistent with age. Excellent preservation overall.
