Overview

A striking hand-blown cobalt blue glass urn-shaped vase featuring intricate silver overlay decoration depicting a majestic peacock perched on a branch. The deep jewel-tone glass provides a dramatic contrast to the detailed metallic embellishments running along the body and rim.

Story

During the Roaring Twenties, cobalt blue glass adorned with silver overlay became the ultimate symbol of Hollywood Regency glamour. Artisans used electroplating techniques to permanently bond precious metal designs onto vivid hand-blown glass vessel surfaces.

Maker / Origin

While unsigned silver overlay glass was produced by prominent American firms like the Rockwell Silver Company and Silver City Glass Co., European workshops in Bohemia and Murano also produced similar export pieces. These makers specialized in electro-depositing pure silver filigree and intricate bird motifs onto brilliant colored glass bodies.

Condition & Value

The cobalt glass body appears intact without visible cracks. There is noticeable rubbing, tarnishing, and minor loss to the silver overlay band near the bulbous base and upper rim, which moderately impacts collector value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
