Overview
A classic six-tier sectional bookcase featuring a dark-stained finish and the iconic 'barrister' silhouette. These modular units were designed to be expanded as a library grew, with each section interlocking to create a seamless, towering cabinet.
Story
Lawyers in the late 1800s needed a way to move massive law libraries without emptying every shelf. These modular 'elastic' units allowed a person to move their books section by section, keeping the contents protected and organized.
Maker / Origin
The Globe-Wernicke Company of Cincinnati became the gold standard for this design, patenting the 'elastic' bookcase system. Their success was so great that 'Barrister Bookcase' became the generic term for any sectional shelving with protective glass fronts.
Condition & Value
The finish shows significant age-related wear and scuffing. Most critically, the glass doors appear to be missing from most sections, which significantly impacts the value and utility of the bookcase. Condition is fair to good for a utility piece. Missing glass reduces value by roughly 50-60%.
