Overview

A bulbous tripod ceramic censer featuring a thick, opalescent sky-blue glaze with a subtle purple-copper splash and fine network of crazing. Set upon three unglazed splay feet of buff-terracotta stoneware, this piece emulates the celebrated Song dynasty Jun ware aesthetic.

Story

Song dynasty emperors adored Jun ware for its mystical lavender-blue glaze, caused by liquid-glass phase separation rather than simple pigments. This censer honors that thousand-year-old tradition.

Maker / Origin

While Jun kilns originally flourished during the Northern Song and Jin dynasties in Henan province, their distinctive aesthetic was revived across the 19th and 20th centuries by master potters seeking to recapture classical imperial elegance.

Condition & Value

Very good vintage/contemporary condition with natural glaze crazing and intentional bare-clay feet; minor kiln-firing stress cracks visible around foot attachments.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
