Overview
A classic piece of American mid-century kitchenware, this double-handled onion soup bowl features the iconic 'brown drip' glaze technique. The rich, caramel-brown top glaze cascades beautifully over a warm, sandy-beige stoneware body, creating a comforting, rustic aesthetic that defined mid-century American dining.
Story
In the 1960s, American dinner tables shifted from formal porcelain to hearty, oven-to-table stoneware. Hull Pottery captured this cozy, rustic revolution with their famous 'House 'n Garden' line, making these bowls a staple of family dinners.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1905 by Addis Emmet Hull, the Hull Pottery Company of Crooksville, Ohio, initially succeeded with utilitarian stoneware before transitioning to art pottery. After surviving a devastating flood and fire in 1950, the company rebuilt and pivoted to highly durable, oven-proof kitchenware, becoming famous for their distinctive drip glazes before closing their doors in 1986.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in excellent vintage condition with a highly glossy glaze and no visible chips, cracks, or heavy utensil scratches. Maintaining this glossy, undamaged finish is key to preserving its modest collector value. While highly collectible, these bowls were mass-produced and remain relatively common.
