Overview

A charming example of American pressed glass, this double-handled vessel features a highly detailed embossed swan motif on both sides.

Story

During the post-war era of the 1940s and 50s, the American dining table was a choreographed display of etiquette where every condiment and accessory had its own specific, ornate home.

Maker / Origin

Founded in 1889, the Westmoreland Glass Company became one of the most famous names in American glassmaking, particularly known for their high-quality milk glass.

Condition & Value

The glass appears remarkably clear with no signs of 'sickness' or permanent clouding. The intricate scalloped rim and the handles appear to be free of the common 'flea bite' chips often found on utilitarian glass of this age. Excellent preservation of the molded details. Condition is excellent and helps maintain its value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
