Overview
This is a grand, executive-class library desk crafted in the high Chippendale style, featuring a deeply carved gadrooned and foliate border. It stands on robust cabriole legs topped by expressive, hand-carved lion masks that terminate in dramatic claw-and-ball feet.
Story
In the early 20th century, successful executives sought to project stability and heritage by furnishing their offices with grand revival pieces. This desk was designed to command a room, serving as a literal stage for business deals.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this desk is characteristic of high-end revival manufacturers from the Grand Rapids, Michigan area (such as Imperial Furniture or Grand Rapids Chair Co.) or quality English workshops of the interwar period. These makers specialized in recreating the complex, hand-carved details of the 18th century for the wealthy industrialists of the 20th century.
Condition & Value
The wood shows a beautiful, deep patina with minor surface scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use. The central writing well appears to be missing its original leather or felt insert, which can be easily replaced by a restorer.
