Overview
This is a classic mid-century mohair plush lying lion, most likely 'Leo' by the legendary German toy manufacturer Steiff. It features a beautifully airbrushed mohair body, a dramatic long-pile floss mane, glass or early plastic eyes, and hand-stitched details on the nose, mouth, and claws.
Story
In 1950s Germany, toy designers captured the majesty of the wild with soft mohair. This lion's expressive face and hand-painted details made him a cherished nursery guardian rather than a mere toy.
Maker / Origin
Founded by Margarete Steiff in 1880, the company revolutionized the toy industry with the invention of the soft-stuffed toy. Despite contracting polio as a child, Margarete's motto 'Only the best is good enough for children' drove the brand to become the global gold standard for high-quality, lifelike plush animals.
Condition & Value
The plush is in very good vintage condition with minor thinning to the mohair mane and light surface dust. The original Steiff 'Button in Ear' and chest tag are missing, but the structural integrity, airbrushing, and whiskers remain remarkably intact. This level of preservation keeps its value stable.
