Overview
This is a charming, small-scale Chinese oil or kerosene lamp featuring a vibrant turquoise-ground cloisonné enamel body decorated with trailing vines, gourds, and bats. The brass mountings are stamped with traditional longevity (Shou) symbols, and it retains its original delicate glass chimney and cotton wick.
Story
During the early 20th century, Chinese artisans adapted traditional imperial cloisonné techniques to create Western-style household items for the export market. This little lamp combined the practical need for portable light with auspicious symbols of wealth and long life.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece was crafted in one of the many specialized metalwork and enamel workshops in Beijing or Shanghai. These workshops flourished by blending ancient Ming and Qing dynasty enamel recipes with the functional demands of global trade.
Condition & Value
The cloisonné enamel appears intact with no major visible cracks or losses. The brass elements show a natural aged patina, minor oxidation, and light surface wear consistent with age. The glass chimney is intact with no major cracks, which is excellent for its age. Excellent condition overall.
