Overview

This is a magnificent blue and white porcelain charger decorated in the classic 'Kraak' panel style, featuring a central medallion depicting perched birds in a waterside garden beneath flowering prunus and pine. The wide, segmented rim is divided into radiating panels filled with alternating floral sprays and auspicious emblems, characteristic of 17th-century global trade porcelain.

Story

During the 17th-century fall of the Ming Dynasty, global porcelain supply collapsed. Japanese kilns in Arita stepped in to supply the Dutch East India Company with Kraak-style wares, igniting a craze across European royal courts.

Maker / Origin

Wares of this type were produced in major export kiln centers—either Jingdezhen in southern China or the early kilns of Arita, Hizen Province, Japan. Artisans specialized in rapid, fluid underglaze cobalt painting that catered specifically to the European taste for exotic segmented 'kraak' designs and domestic tea-master aesthetics.

Condition & Value

Displays visible rim fritting (mushikui), typical kiln spur and grit marks on the base, and at least one visible hairline crack running through the upper rim into the cavetto. The hairline crack reduces overall market value by approximately 40-50%, though early export ceramics retain strong decorative demand.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
