Overview

This is a slip-cast ceramic candleholder modeled as a serpentine dragon gargoyle coiled around an architectural Ionic scroll column. Made in 1995, it features an antiqued stone-wash glaze meant to evoke aged Gothic cathedral stonework.

Story

Popular in 1995, this piece tapped into the massive 90s Gothic revival and fantasy trend, turning home craft ceramics into medieval stone gargoyles.

Maker / Origin

The underside bears a commercial ceramic slip-cast mold copyright mark dated 1995 alongside hand-incised hobbyist initials ('SK'). During the late 20th century, ceramic studios provided commercial greenware molds that hobbyists would glaze, fire, and personalize.

Condition & Value

The candleholder appears structurally sound with no visible chips, cracks, or heavy wear; intentional antiquing glaze is well-preserved. Excellent vintage condition commands the upper end of its modest value range.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
