Overview
An exceptional Japanese porcelain jar featuring a globular body decorated with a dynamic underglaze blue wave pattern and relief-molded Shishi (mythical guardian lions). The Shishi are rendered with exquisite, fine-line detailing in a contrasting pale celadon-grey glaze, appearing to leap through the churning, stylized waves. The underside features a simple, hand-painted blue underglaze maker's mark.
Story
Crafted in the legendary Mikawachi kilns, this jar depicts Shishi leaping through stormy seas. This motif represents the ultimate test of courage, as legend says Shishi threw their cubs into gorges to find the strongest.
Maker / Origin
Hirado ware, produced at the Mikawachi kilns, was originally reserved exclusively for the Matsura clan lords of Hirado. Renowned for its pure white porcelain body, incredibly fine underglaze blue painting, and sculptural relief work, it became one of Japan's most celebrated export arts during the Meiji period, winning accolades at international world's fairs.
Condition & Value
The jar appears to be in very good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations to the delicate relief-molded Shishi. There is minor surface dirt and light scuffing on the unglazed foot ring consistent with age. Excellent preservation of the relief elements strongly supports the higher end of the value range.
