Overview
A striking mid-century sterling silver pendant featuring a large, natural Mexican Cantera opal cabochon. The central stone showcases fiery pockets of precious jelly opal embedded within its native pinkish-brown rhyolite matrix, framed by a classic scalloped silver border with applied beadwork.
Story
Deep within the volcanic mountains of Jalisco, miners discovered pockets of fiery color trapped inside ordinary volcanic rock. Mexican lapidaries realized that leaving the opal in its native rhyolite matrix created a miniature, cosmic landscape.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop mark inside the eagle assay stamp is partially obscured, this piece bears the unmistakable hallmarks of Taxco's silver renaissance. During the mid-20th century, Taxco became a global hub of avant-garde jewelry design, blending indigenous Mexican motifs with modernist aesthetics.
Condition & Value
The pendant is in very good vintage condition with a rich, natural patina on the silver. The Cantera opal cabochon is secure in its bezel, showing no major cracks or chips to the exposed opal pockets. Excellent preservation of the silver beadwork.
